Since 1998, BBQ fans from all around San Diego County have come to restaurateur Phil Pace to satiate a single craving: mesquite grilled baby back and beef ribs, chicken, and sandwiches. Phil has established his foundation on consistency, quality, freshness, and polite service, serving hundreds of clients every day ranging from skateboarders to Bentleys.

 

“We thrive on giving each visitor the ‘Phil’s Experience,’ which really boils down to organized pandemonium,” owner Phil Pace jokes. “Our faithful consumers who have backed us and stood in line for a taste of BBQ since ’98 are the driving force behind our success.”

 

Phil’s BBQ has served over one million (and counting!) gallons of Phil’s special BBQ sauce (enough to fill Shamu’s tank) since opening its doors in San Diego. We have grown from four people to well over 400 and have become a preferred employer in San Diego. After the smoke cleared from the old Phil’s BBQ site in Mission Hills, the restaurant moved to a considerably bigger building in Point Loma in 2007. Even if the site has changed, Phil’s experience and menu remain the same: lengthy lines, a lively, cheerful environment, delicious cuisine, enormous quantities, and many, many paper towels. Phil’s BBQ has successfully launched four additional standalone restaurants in San Marcos (which will close when the lease expires in 2020), Santee, Rancho Bernardo, and Temecula. We also have sites at San Diego International Airport (Terminal 2 West) and at the Sycuan Casino (the uncommon).

 

Phil does not come from a long line of BBQ experts. Instead, he developed a top-secret recipe for BBQ rubs and sauce from scratch, following his father’s admonition to “always cook what you know best and treat staff like family.” Phil has been a fast-casual eating pioneer since the first shop opened, offering San Diegans what they want – delicious BBQ! Taking care of clients, meeting their appetites, and supporting them has always been the top priority.
